2013: A light at the end of the tunnel?

Perspectives for growth and employment

After a disappointing 2012, all eyes focus on the European economic forecasts for 2013. However, these still show a lot of uncertainties, especially for the Euro zone. The recession from 2008 and the crisis in the Euro zone are still hindering a lot of development opportunities and keeping the growth forecast below 1% for 2013 and just at 1% for 2014 – which still represents a slight progress vs. the previous year. Even in Germany, one of the most robust markets of the Euro zone, the economic forecasts for this year had to be readjusted as it hinges on developments in the European debt crisis and the country’s growth has slowed down.

The importance of long-term supplier relations

In those times of doubts and economic roller coaster, should companies engage in long-term relationships with suppliers or adopt a flexible approach to client-supplier collaboration?
Staying on course and grabbing business opportunities whilst navigating stormy waters is a stressful responsibility for managers which will require them to strictly focus on their objectives and rely on other crew members to help with the more mundane tasks.
These “crew members” involve not only in-house staff but external partners as well and there are many benefits derived from a strong and clear client/customer relationship, providing a secure and sustainable advantage.

Choosing a procurement model

Centralised, decentralised or outsourced – how to find what best suits your business

Many SME do not have a dedicated purchasing/procurement department, preferring to decentralise purchases to heads of different services, sometimes with a limited purchasing authority of several thousand euros, rather than remunerating a specifically dedicated person.

The importance of purchasing is increasing

The financial and economic crisis in 2008 and 2009 also had an effect on the purchasing and procurement sectors in businesses. More than two thirds of companies see risk management as the primary task of purchasing; mainly to safeguard themselves against supplier, commodity and currency risks. Accordingly, the acceptance of purchasing departments in business is constantly increasing: 54% of executives have stated that purchasing works on the same level as other major business departments. The pioneers in this process are the automotive, retail and electronics industries. These are the results of a study in which around 500 executives, COOs and purchasing managers were interviewed worldwide.

The European economy pays its tribute to the financial crisis. Based on the latest issues of the European Purchases Manager Index, the productivity of the private sector of the European Union has deteriorated for the fourth consecutive month. There has only been one other sequence in the 14-year series history that productivity has fallen for a longer length of time - during the global economic crisis in 2008 and early 2009. Although the decline of the European economy has been declined, the index still indicates a significant negative growth rate. Of the big four EU economies Italian firms are the most marked deterioration in productivity. The Purchasing Managers’ Index is published monthly based on a survey of among 3.000 companies European-wide.
